Have you ever wondered…Where our icebergs come from?
The inland ice sheet covering Greenland is 15 times larger than the area of Newfoundland and is about two kilometres thick. Despite the stunning size of the island and the vast coastline, there is one glacier seven kilometres wide that produces 10 per cent of all icebergs in the Northern Hemisphere. This glacier moves quickly, advancing and retreating seasonally, churning out an astonishing 30 or more cubic kilometres of icebergs over a 12-month period. Last summer Dr. Steve Bruneau, from Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, visited this glacier and the town nearby. Join him for a presentation and a photo journal of his experience.
The Speaking of Engineering event, hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at 7:30 p.m., in the Angus Bruneau Engineering Lecture Theatre, room EN-2006, on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. Admission is free. Parking is available in Lot 16. All are welcome. Reception will follow.
