SUBJECT: Memorial University president to visit Labrador

Memorial President Dr. Axel Meisen will be in Labrador from Jan. 24-25. Dr. Meisen will be in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, to meet with local community leaders, as well as alumni and friends of the university. While in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Dr. Meisen will host a reception at the Masonic Lodge where Dr. Steve Bruneau, an assistant professor in Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, will present a discussion entitled Working with Ice: Challenges and Opportunities. Dr. Penny Blackwood, director of Memorial’s Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, is also attending the event which begins at 7:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Jan. 25, Dr. Meisen will be in Nain to attend the Labrador launch of the Labrador Inuit through Moravian Eyes website in the presence of representatives of the Nunatsiavut Government, teachers and students and the community. The launch event takes place from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in the Jens Haven Memorial School.
Dr. Meisen’s trip to Labrador builds on several key visits he has made in the past number of years to various parts of the province, including Labrador City, Port aux Basques, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook and Marystown.
Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the site of the Labrador Institute of Memorial University which was built to stimulate, co-ordinate and support major university projects and programs to promote the well-being of the people of Labrador.
Dr. Meisen will be available to speak with the media on a number of issues including Memorial University’s role in Labrador and the ongoing development of the provincial economy, and the role of universities in fostering innovation in the Atlantic economy.
