SUBJECT: Memorial University grads appear on the big screen

Memorial’s fingerprints are all over the new crime comedy hitting theatres across the country this weekend. Young Triffie, based on Young Triffie’s Been Made Away With, the play written by Memorial honorary grad Ray Guy, includes several grads from the School of Fine Arts at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.
Jonny Harris, Susan Kent and Sherry White, all theatre graduates, have parts in the movie. Jonny Harris plays Billy Head, Susan Kent plays Mrs. Head and Sherry White takes on the role of Matron Sankey.
Ken Livingstone, head, School of Fine Arts, said all three were outstanding students and evidence of the quality of the program at Grenfell.
“Like so many of their classmates they immediately began exciting careers performing on stage, television and film both in Newfoundland and elsewhere,” he said. “We are proud of all of them and wish Young Triffie every success.”
Set in pre-confederation Newfoundland, Young Triffie is a black comedy starring Fred Ewanuick, Mary Walsh, Remy Girard, Andrea Martin, Andy Jones, Colin Mochrie, and Cathy Jones. Rookie Ranger Alan Hepditch (Ewanuick) is sent to Swyer’s Harbour to investigate a sheep mutilation only to find himself leading a murder investigation when the body of “that poor young silly person” Tryphenia Maude Pottle is found. From the time the body washes ashore replete with 13 stab wounds, until the preacher’s hand is nailed to a table, the laughter never lets up in this comic murder mystery.
Young Triffie opens at Empire Theatres, Avalon Mall, on Good Friday, April 6. A joint Quebec-Newfoundland production, the film was shot in Trinity and St. John’s.
Rémy Girard, star of the Oscar-winning Les Invasions barbares, plays the part of Dr. Melrose while Andrea Martin, of SCTV fame, takes on the role of his wife. Investigating a particularly gruesome crime is Newfoundland Ranger Alan Hepditch played by Fred Ewanuick (Hank from Corner Gas).
CODCO alumni Mary Walsh, who were awarded an honorary doctorate by Memorial in 2000, directs and stars in this feature film. For more, see www.morag.ca.
