SUBJECT: Marine Institute Career Fair set for Feb 7-8

DATE: February 6, 2007

Employers from across Canada are choosing the best and brightest students for positions in the marine, oceans and food industries this week at the Marine Institute’s Career Fair taking place Feb. 7-8.
The Marine Institute has organized the annual fair since 2000 and this year’s fair is expected to be the largest ever with over 40 exhibitors and presenters participating during the two-day event.
The fair showcases the knowledge and skills of MI students and graduates including those from nautical science, marine engineering, food technology, naval architecture, marine environment, aquaculture, ROV and ocean instrumentation and matches them with employers who are seeking new employees for their workforce.
“This event is decidedly different than most job fairs,” says Darlene Foote, MI placement officer and one of the organizers of the fair. “Students and alumni will find positions here that can take them around the world and allow them to continue to live here at home. These industries let people find meaningful careers without having to leave the province.”
Feb. 7 will feature presentations from employers and MI alumni who are leaders in their respective fields.
Feb. 8 will see employers setting up displays and interacting with students and graduates from institute’s wide range of certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and degree programs.
This year, the general public is invited to attend from 1 – 3 p.m. to learn more about how the marine and ocean industries are contributing to this province’s economic development and employment growth.
Students who are attending the fair are reminded they’ll be required to show their student ID cards at the door.
Members of the media are welcome to attend.
