SUBJECT: Grenfell - Grenfell College to offer bachelor of business administration degree
DATE: March 23, 2007
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College has added another degree to its growing list of offerings.
A bachelor of business administration, the 15th degree being offered at Grenfell College, was given final approval earlier this month.
“We’ve been delivering courses in the field of business for quite some time now with great success,” said Dr. John Ashton, principal of Grenfell College. “There was an obvious need on the west coast and so our business faculty have been working towards the implementation of a full bachelor of business administration. Our new program was designed with the regional development needs of western Newfoundland firmly in mind. We hope to produce graduates who are instilled with a culture of entrepreneurship that will enable them to start and develop businesses within the region.”
Specifically, business professor Julie Pitcher has been instrumental in the development of this degree.
“Grenfell’s BBA program delivers a comprehensive foundation in the fundamentals of business and decision making, and emphasizes the practical application of a skill set based in critical thinking, research and analysis, and professional conduct and communication.” said Professor Pitcher. “In addition, our BBA program offers students the opportunity to concentrate in one of three growing areas of interest in particularly suited to our evolving business environment: contemporary business studies, small business and entrepreneurship and regional economic development.”
The advantage of studying business at Grenfell College is obvious, she added.
“As a centre for liberal thinking in the arts, sciences and social sciences, Grenfell offers a unique opportunity to engage our future business leaders in the exploration of creative, ‘outside-the-box’ solutions to today’s business challenges. Students will be challenged to adopt a comprehensive stakeholder approach to decision making that includes a consideration of the impacts of ethical conduct and corporate citizenship in all areas—an approach that is becoming all the more significant given society’s increasing demands for accountability.”
While business courses are currently being offered, the full program will be offered as of September 2007 – students applying now for the fall semester will be able to declare their major in the BBA program.
Dr. Ashton added that the new program will help the college to recruit more students within Canada and internationally, as well as encourage more of our current students to stay on the west coast for completion of their programs.
“Our business degree and the outreach services that will grow around it complement our efforts to develop as a centre for tourism education in the province as well as those to establish a Centre of Excellence for Environmental Education and Research that will spin off significant and commercially viable environmental services and technologies.”
