2005-2006
News Release
REF NO.: 121
SUBJECT:
DATE: November 24, 2005
Memorial University will hold consultation meetings to discuss a new report that examines its varsity athletics program.
Now is the Time! was recently completed and submitted to Dr. Eddy Campbell, vice-president (academic). The report looks at the reporting relationship and funding mechanisms of the program.
A committee established earlier this year by Dr. Campbell prepared the report. Dr. Bill Redden and Keith Taylor, both former directors of Memorial’s School of Human Kinetics and Recreation who are now retired, as well as Gail Roberts, a community representative and former varsity athlete, are a part of the committee. In total, they made 23 recommendations. Their full report is available online at www.mun.ca/vpacademic/varsity_athletics.php.
Dr. Campbell is holding an internal university forum on Friday, Dec. 16, from 10 a.m.to 12 noon in room A-1043 to discuss the report and its recommendations.
He is hoping faculty within the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, along with staff, coaches, students, varsity athletes and other internal units with sport responsibilities will attend the meeting.
“This report contains a set of recommendations which will help shape the future of varsity athletics at Memorial,” said Dr. Campbell. “This meeting is important for units and representatives here at the university who want to have some input on this important issue.”
Dr. Campbell noted that the report’s recommendations are just suggestions and have not been approved or adopted by the university.
Another forum with special interest groups and sport and community organizations will also be held in the coming weeks. Details will be announced at a later date.
Members of the university community who wish to attend the Dec. 16 meeting should RSVP Dr. Campbell’s office by Dec. 14 at hobrien@mun.ca or call 737-8246.
