A brand new exhibition showcasing the artistic flair of 22 current and former employees of Memorial University has just been launched on the St. John’s campus.
After Hours features a variety of artwork faculty, staff and pensioners of the university and is mounted in the First Space Gallery on the main level of the Queen Elizabeth II Library.
The special display has been in the works for a number of months and is the first exhibition to highlight the talent of the university community. After Hours is the seventh show to be mounted in the gallery.
The idea for the new exhibit was hatched after a number of employees and pensioners inquired about launching a show featuring their own creations.
“This show is mounted to bring together the artists on campus who do their artwork after hours for their own enjoyment or sanity, after their workday is done,” said Dan Duda, map librarian at the QE II Library and one of the organizers of the show.
“Artwork on display is all two-dimensional in a variety of media and subject matter including oil, acrylic, watercolour, collage, mixed media and photography to name a few.”
And the subject matter is just as diverse. Artists have captured a number of styles in their artwork including still life, floral, abstract and expressionism.
Organizers of After Hours have been busy since this winter recruiting artists and getting ready for the launch. They’re hoping to attract the attention of not just the university community but anyone with an interest in art.
The Queen Elizabeth II Library is open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-10:45 p.m. Friday from 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m. and Sunday from 2-8:45 p.m. Admission is free.
After Hours runs until August 12.
