SUBJECT: Memorial University medical students want to win national Blood Donor Challenge

DATE: February 9, 2006

Medical students at Memorial University want to win the 2006 Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) Blood Donor Challenge.

Each year Memorial’s medical students participate in this challenge against the many medical schools and medical programs throughout Canada. “Each year, we’ve almost been number one and this year we want to be number one,” said first-year medical student Erin Kelland.

To help this happen there will be a special blood donor clinic at the Health Sciences Centre, Lecture Theatre D, on Friday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. As an added incentive, free pizza and refreshments will be provided.

If you want to support Memorial’s medical students in their drive to be number one in blood donations in the CFMS challenge, you can donate at this clinic or at Canadian Blood Services, 7 Wicklow Street from Feb. 13 to Feb. 15 from 11:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Another clinic will be held Feb.16 from 11:30 a.m.-7 p.m.

According to Canadian Blood Services, this year alone it will take over 860,000 units of blood to treat hospital patients in Canada.
