SUBJECT: Memorial launches Math in the Mall

Budding mathematicians will be strapping on their thinking caps and heading to the Avalon Mall this Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006. They’ll be there taking part in a special program organized by Memorial University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Math in the Mall, is an educational event tailor-made to get young children involved in math and to show them that the subject can be fun.
The department is committed to the support, promotion and popularization of the subject here in this province. The Math in the Mall initiative is open to anyone but is being targeted at young children ages 7-12.
Activities such as a math trail, a type of mathematical scavenger hunt, will involve participants roaming the mall in search of answers to particular problems such as: estimating the number of tiles in the ceiling of a certain store; describing the geometric shape in a store logo; or discovering how long it takes to move between floors on an escalator.
Organizers want to show that math is not only a part of our daily lives but that it can also be a fun subject to embrace.
This is not the first time Memorial University has held this type of activity. In the early 1990s, the department held a similar highly successful program for several years.
Math in the Mallis slated for Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. There will be demonstrations, handouts, games as well as prizes. There is no cost to take part in the program. Organizers will be set near the bottom of the escalator just below the Food Court in the Avalon Mall.
