As part of Celebrate Memorial 2004, Dr. Christopher Kilmartin, professor of psychology at MaryWashingtonCollegein Virginia, will give a public talk on Tuesday, Oct. 26. The talk, titled Myths of Masculinity: Historical, Cultural and Social Contexts, will be held in room AA-1043, located in the Arts and Administration building, starting at 7 p.m.This talk is sponsored by the Sexual Harassment Office at MemorialUniversity. Members of the general public are invited to attend. Parking will be available in Lot15, across from the Schoolof Music.
Dr. Christopher Kilmartin is a professor of psychology at Mary Washington College in Fredericksberg, Virginia. His major scholarly works include: The Masculine Self, The Pain Behind the Mask – Overcoming Masculine Depression and Sexual Assault in Context – Teaching College Men About Gender. In his spare time, Dr. Kilmartin is a professional stand-up comedian and has written a solo performance theatre piece on men’s issues titled Crimes Against Nature. This work, an integration of his scholarly and performing interests, and performed by the author, debuted in March 1998 and has since toured to more than 100 campuses and other venues. Dr. Kilmartin has also been involved in the U.S.leadership of the White Ribbon Campaign, a grass-roots effort to decrease men’s violence against women.
Celebrate Memorial is an annual celebration of Memorial’s connection to the community. What began in 1999 with the Festival of Anniversaries, highlighting Memorial’s 50th anniversary as a degree-granting institution, has today become a celebration of the contributions that Memorial’s students, faculty, staff and alumni make to Newfoundland and Labrador.
