Streets around Memorial University should be free of old furniture and other items this spring while students prepare to move from the St. John’s campus and surrounding area. MUN Project Green and Memorial’s Society for Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility (CESR) have once again organized the community-wide yard sale Dump and Run, which raises money for environmental projects at Memorial while reducing the dumping of useful items into landfills.
Tracy Glynn, one of the organizers of Dump and Run 2005, encourages students and the wider community to participate.
“By extending the useful life of items no longer needed by donating them we are also extending the life of our landfills,” she explained.
“People have been surprised to find working computers, televisions, and more useful items not normally found at a typical yard sale.”
Funds raised go towards environmental projects of both societies at Memorial and left over items are donated to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
The idea first began at Syracuse University in 1999 when student Lisa Heller checked the dumpster for a lost a ring given to her by her grandmother. She never found the ring but was astonished by the amount of discarded usable items she found.
Dump and Run was born and by the end of the second year discarded items decreased by about 50 per cent and the funds donated to numerous charities. Dump and Run has since grown into an international movement at universities and colleges. Memorial held its first Dump and Run in 2003.
Public donations of clothing, furniture, appliances and other items are welcomed and can be dropped off between 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, through Sunday, April 24, at West Hatcher House, a residence at Memorial University's main campus. The doors of West Hatcher House will open for the sale, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Friday, April 22, through to Sunday, April 24. Food will also be collected for the local food bank. Those who require pick-up service can call 691-1985 for pick-up service anywhere in St. John's.
