On Monday, July 4, 2005, Memorial University of Newfoundland will be hosting visiting lecturer Dr. Michael Meaney, McGill University, the speaker for the 2005 Dr. John G. Williams Lecture in the Neurosciences. This year’s Williams lecture is being held during the annual meeting of the CanadianCollegeof Neuropsychopharmacology at the Fairmont Hotel Newfoundland. Faculty, students and staff from MemorialUniversityare invited to attend this academic lecture which is also open to the public. Dr. Meany’s lecture is titled Maternal care, gene expression and individual differences in stress responses and begins at 4 p.m.
Immediately following the lecture a reception has been planned by the Williams Lecture Committee, to take place in the Court Garden at the Fairmont Hotel Newfoundland. This event will provide an opportunity for Dr. Meaney to meet with members of the academic community as well as Dr. Anne Williams and her mother, Ena May Williams, (family of Dr. John Williams and sponsors of the lectureship). Medical student and musician Doug Angel will provide piano entertainment during the reception.
The Dr. John G. Williams Lectureship in the Neurosciences was established by the Faculty of Medicine in 1990, made possible through a generous donation from the Williams family. Dr. John G. Williams trained in psychiatry, neurology and electroencephalography and was among the first medical practitioners in the province to bring specialized care to patients with neurological diseases. He also had a keen interest in postgraduate medical education and served as a counsellor in the Division of Postgraduate Medical Studies.
The distinguished Dr. John G. Williams Lectureship in the Neurosciences is meant to cover the breadth of the neurosciences from the behavioural to the molecular. Lecturers are chosen by a committee comprised of representatives of neurology, psychiatry, and neurosciences and the lecture is held every second year.
