SUBJECT: Students eager to participate in risky business event

DATE: March 3, 2005

Two students from Memorial’s Faculty of Business Administration are preparing to go head-to-head with calculated risk-takers from across the country this weekend. The students will be participating in the inaugural RMA Credit Risk Case Competition being held at Dalhousie University March 4-5.

Memorial’s team is comprised of master of business administration students Scott Pelley and Bill Warren and is coached by Dr. Alex Faseruk. The competition will give students an opportunity to experience what managing risk is all about and aims to increase awareness of the importance of credit risk in today’s financial sector.

"Formulating solutions to real world problems and then selling actual executives on the merits of those solutions forces you to develop skill sets that are in high demand in today's complex business environment,” said Mr. Pelley. “The experience has made me much more comfortable with the process of making quick, well-reasoned decisions."

In addition to having studied financial management in their MBA program, Mr. Warren and Mr. Pelley benefited from a practical session on credit analysis delivered by Dr. Faseruk and Sam Walters, former vice-president of RBC.

“The finance department at Memorial has some of the top professors in the field so it will be interesting to see how we stack up against the other schools,” said Mr. Warren. ”Plus, it's a great opportunity to network with current finance professionals and meet the students who are likely to become banking executives themselves, in the near future."

The RMA Credit Risk Case Competition is being hosted by Dalhousie’s RBC Centre for Risk Management.
