SUBJECT: PSA: David Hawkins Lectureship in Health Sciences Research

Dr. Lorne Tyrrell, former dean of medicine and dentistry at the University of Alberta, will present the David Hawkins Lectureship in Health Sciences Research on Friday, May 20, from 12-1 p.m.in the main auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Centre. His topic is From the Farm to Big Pharma: The Role of Animal Models in the Development of Viral Hepatitis Therapies. Admission is free and free parking is available in Lot9.

Dr. Tyrrell is an outstanding research scientist who brought international attention to the University of Alberta when he developed the world’s first oral antiviral drug for the treatment of hepatitis B. Dr. Tyrrell won the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Award in 1993 and the university’s highest research honour, the J. Gordin Kaplan Research Prize, in 1998. He is also a respected teacher, the winner of numerous teaching awards in the Faculty of Medicine, where he has taught since 1975, including the university’s Rutherford Teaching Award. In 1999 he received the university’s pre-eminent award recognizing excellence in both teaching and research, the University Cup. Dr. Tyrrell was awarded the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2000.
