SUBJECT: Memorial University presents Henrietta Harvey Chair lecture: Language, Languages and History in Africa

Dr. Derek Nurse, Memorial University’s current Henrietta Harvey Chair, will present a public lecture titled Language, Languages, and History in Africaon Monday, April 11, 2005, at 4 p.m.in the Arts and Administration Building, room A-1045.
Roughly 30 per cent of the world's 6,800 languages are spoken in Africa. Dr. Nurse will discuss where these languages have come from, how they are distributed across the continent, who use them today, and the language policies of African governments.
A faculty member of Memorial since 1986, Dr. Nurse received his MA from UC Berkeley and his PhD in linguistics at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Retired in August 2004, Dr. Nurse continues his research in this area as Henrietta Harvey Chair and is also currently working on a publication on Niger/Congo.
