SUBJECT: Globe and Mail columnist Jeffrey Simpson to deliver Galbraith Lecture

Jeffrey Simpson, national affairs columnist with the Globe and Mail, will deliver this year’s John Kenneth Galbraith Lecture in Public Policy on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004at 8 p.m. in the D.F. Cook Recital Hall, School of Music on Memorial University’s St. John’scampus. The lecture is titled Health vs. Higher Education: Must Higher Education Lose Out? Following the lecture there will be a reception. Free parking is available in Lot15 or in 15B for a $2 fee.
A native of New York, Mr. Simpson came to Canada when he was 10 years old and has studied at the University of Toronto, Queen's University and the London School of Economics. In 1972-73, he received a parliamentary internship scholarship in Ottawa. One year later, he joined the Globe and Mail.
He began his career with the Globe and Mail at City Hall in Toronto. In 1977, he became a member of the paper's Ottawa bureau, and 18 months later he was named the Globe and Mail's Ottawa bureau chief. From 1981-1983, Mr. Simpson served as the Globe's European correspondent based in London, England. He began writing his national affairs column in January 1984.
Mr. Simpson is the recipient of three of Canada’s leading literary prizes: the Governor-General’s award for non-fiction book writing, the National Magazine Award for political writing and the National Newspaper Award for column writing. He has published five books – Discipline of Power (1980); Spoils of Power (1988); Faultines, Struggling for a Canadian Vision (1993); The Anxious Years (1996) and Star-Spangled Canadians (2000). His most recent book, The Friendly Dictatorship: Reflections on Canadian Democracy (2001), was nominated for the Donner Prize as the best book on public policy. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates of laws from the University of British Columbia, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Manitoba. In January 2000, he became an officer of the Order of Canada.
Mr. Simpson has been a member of the board of trustees at Queen's University; the board of overseers at GreenCollege, University of British Columbia, and the editorial board of The Queen's Quarterly. He has been vice-chairman of the City of Ottawa Library Board and was awarded the William Watkinson Award for outstanding contributions to the Canadian Library community. The John Kenneth Galbraith Lecture in Public Policy is an initiative of Memorial University’s Public Policy Research Centre (now renamed the Harris Centre), the Office of the Dean of Arts and the Office of the President. Made possible through a generous donation from Dr. Galbraith, the annual lecture is intended to bring to Memorial University outstanding figures whose work reflects their commitment to excellence in scholarship and public affairs.
