SUBJECT: Giving back to the community: Memorial to hold Community Service Day

In keeping with the theme of Celebrate Memorial – Connecting to Community – Memorial University will hold a Community Service Day on Saturday, Oct. 23. The event will get underway at 9:30 a.m.and there will be three two-hour sessions happening throughout the day. This is an excellent opportunity for Memorial students, faculty and staff to participate in community projects that have an environmental theme. This year, in partnership with the Friends of Pippy Park Inc., approximately 360 students will plant over 6,000 native Newfoundland seedlings and spring bulbs in areas around the university. These seedlings were provided by The Grand Concourse Authority. Working with Mill Lane Enterprises, 140 students will also collect recyclables.
“Community Service Day is an excellent opportunity for the university to work in partnership with community organizations such as the Friends of Pippy Park Inc. Without this partnership, this massive planting project would not be happening,” said Sandra Patterson, coordinator of service learning initiatives, Career Development and Experiential Learning at Memorial. “Together, we are helping to beautify and naturalize our community and we are creating opportunities for our student leaders to engage in meaningful environmental projects. These community service and learning initiatives helps us to develop student leaders.”
Celebrate Memorial is an annual celebration of Memorial’s connection to the community. What began in 1999 with the Festival of Anniversaries, highlighting Memorial’s 50th anniversary as a degree-granting institution, has today become a celebration of the contributions that Memorial’s students, faculty, staff and alumni make to Newfoundland and Labrador.
