Building on a long history of collaboration between Cenovus Energy and Memorial University, Cenovus Energy has announced a major investment of $2.25 million in support of students and programming across a range of initiatives at both Memorial and the Marine Institute.
“This investment recognizes the incredible work that is already happening at Memorial, where we are training brilliant minds to solve the challenges of tomorrow,” said Dr. Janet Morrison, president and vice-chancellor, Memorial University. “It is deeply gratifying to have the support of industry partners who understand the importance of investing in students. Cenovus recognizes that today’s students will be the drivers of tomorrow’s economic advancement, social progress and technological transformations. On behalf of Memorial University, I am honoured to share our gratitude for this gift.”
“In the past 20 years of our operations, we’ve been proud to support Memorial University, either through its co-operative education program or through investments like this,” said Jon McKenzie, president and chief executive officer, Cenovus. “Memorial plays a critical role in developing the pipeline of talent needed to grow our industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, and this investment will support programs that directly benefit students across various faculties and disciplines.”
Key initiatives supported include the below.
- The Student Design Hub in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science supports any Memorial student competing in a student-centred competition or hoping to develop a product prototype by providing programming, access to resources, guidance and a means for students to connect over their passion for creation. Current prototypes under design at the Student Design Hub include drones built to detect and contain forest fires, rovers capable of operating on Mars and dozens more innovative, student-led projects
- Cenovus Energy Scholarships for engineering students
- Marine Institute competitions in marine technology and seamanship
- The Cenovus on the Rock Field Course in the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science
- Memorial’s Limitless Leadership Program is an award-winning program designed for high-potential undergraduate women to help them begin their leadership journeys with confidence and positivity.
