These photographs belong to Pauline Mitsuk, who passed them along to us via Eva Luther.

The photographs have been attributed to James Laurence Cotter (b.1839, d. 1889), a Hudson's Bay Factor and photographer. Cotter is well-known for taking photographs of the area around Hudson's Bay, and for taking some of the first photographs of the Inuit of the Eastmain District at Little Whale River.

For details of Cotter's life, see http://www.biographi.ca/EN/009004-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr =5443. More of Cotter's photographs can be viewed online at the McCord Museum: http://www.musee-mccord.qc.ca.

Cotter's son and his family lived in St. Vital, and that is where the photographs were given to Ms. Mitsuk. The photos are in the public domain.
