Leaving a gift in your Will—sometimes called legacy or planned giving—offers a meaningful and enduring way to support Memorial University without affecting your financial security today.

Memorial gifts are a wonderful way to honour a family member, friend, teacher, or colleague who has passed away. Your gift pays tribute to their influence and legacy, and can be directed to any area at Memorial University that is meaningful to you.

To give in someone's memory:

• include their name on the online donation form; or
• include their name in the note section of your cheque; or
• call us at 709-689-0292 (or toll-free at 1-877-700-4081).

If you'd like someone notified of your gift, provide their contact information and we'll send an acknowledgment without mentioning the donation amount. Some families also choose to give in lieu of flowers; we can provide donation cards, pre-paid return envelopes, or suggested wording for obituaries.

To create a tribute, we can help you establish a named fund to support a scholarship, bursary, or specific project. These awards can be presented annually for a set number of years, or endowed to support students in perpetuity. Anyone who contributes will receive a charitable tax receipt.

American Residents:

Alumni: Memorial University alumni and their families (ie. spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, siblings) may make donations directly to the University in either Canadian or U.S. dollars. Under the Canada-United States Income Tax Convention, the charitable tax receipt you receive from the University can be used for U.S. income tax returns.

Non-Alumni: American residents who are not alumni or related to alumni of Memorial University, as well as corporations and foundations, can contribute through Friends of Memorial University Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization recognized under the US Internal Revenue Code. When making your gift to the Friends of Memorial University, please indicate your preferred designation for the use of the funds by Memorial. For example, “I would prefer that these funds be designated to the Jennifer Doe Scholarship at Memorial University”.

Memorial University accepts donations from residents of all countries. However, as we do not have a formal treaty or other arrangement with countries other than the United States, we encourage residents from other countries to consult their own financial advisors for tax advantages pertaining to philanthropic gifts towards Memorial.
