Scholarships and Awards

This section covers scholarships, awards, and financial opportunities available to Biochemistry students, with information on eligibility, deadlines, and application procedures.

To qualify for the Dean's List, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Take at least nine courses over two semesters in the academic year.
  • Achieve an average of 80% across those courses.
  • Have at least seven A's in your courses.
  • At least six of these courses must be in science.

For more detailed regulations, you can refer to the official Faculty of Science web pages.

Generally, no. The Dean of Science Office automatically determines who is on the Dean's List. However, if you believe there are exceptional circumstances that may prevent you from being included, you should reach out to the Advising Office to discuss your case.

There are two categories of scholarships available to Biochemistry students:

  1. Biochemistry Department Scholarships: These scholarships, bursaries, and prizes are specific to students in Biochemistry programs.
  2. Faculty of Science and University-wide Scholarships: These are available to students across the Faculty of Science or university-wide, regardless of specific academic discipline.

You can find a list of scholarships specific to Biochemistry students on the Department of Biochemistry Undergraduate Scholarships page.

You don't need to apply!

Each year, the Biochemistry Department reviews eligible students and nominates those who best meet the scholarship criteria. To be considered for scholarships that are restricted to honours students, you must have declared honours standing by September 1 each year.

It depends:

  • For some scholarships, you may need to apply. Contact the Dean of Science Office (for Faculty of Science scholarships) or the Scholarships Office (for University-wide scholarships) to find out the application process and deadlines.
  • For other scholarships, the office will automatically determine the best candidates.

The department is sometimes asked to nominate students for awards based on specific criteria, such as:

  • Involvement in extracurricular activities.
  • Participation in varsity athletics.
  • Leadership ability.
  • Financial need.

If you're interested in being nominated for such awards, you should self-identify by contacting the Advising Office. Please note that expressing interest doesn't guarantee you will be nominated, as typically, only one name is submitted for each award. Also, you must be in Scholarship standing to be considered.
