Why Maritime Studies @ Memorial?

Memorial’s Marine Institute offers three (3) degree options in the area of Maritime Studies.

The degree of Master of Science in Maritime Studies (Safety: The Human Element) is a full- or part-time research-focused master’s degree. This program is for students who demonstrate commitment and passion for the human element, safety, and survival in complex and safety-critical systems. It focuses on empowering students to conduct publication-quality research in human factors aspects of maritime studies.

The degree of Master of Science in Maritime Studies (Public Safety) is a full- or part-time research-focused master’s degree. This program is for students who demonstrate commitment and passion for public safety, broadly defined. It focuses on empowering students to conduct publication-quality research in areas of public safety and the training and wellness of people in public safety occupations.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime Studies is offered to full-time and part-time students. This program is aimed at those who want to participate in extensive and original research that generates new knowledge in the areas of human factors, safety, training, and survival in maritime environments and public safety spaces. Researchers will be equipped with a national and internationally demanded skill set that focuses on research innovation and design, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and science communication. Depending on the field of interest, a researcher may study the human factors that impact on safety and survival in maritime environments, or public safety, including training and wellness in public safety occupations.
