Anthropology

Why Anthropology @ Memorial?

At the graduate level we offer a coursework-based MA program which does not involve fieldwork and is designed to be completed in 12 months; a thesis-based MA program which requires ethnographic fieldwork; and a PhD program which requires ethnographic fieldwork. We also offer a one-year graduate diploma which does not require research.

Many of our former graduate students have gone on to become professional anthropologists. Others have used anthropology to build careers in fields such as journalism, filmmaking, and public policy. In recent decades, the Department has placed a strong emphasis on the use of film and video in our research projects. A number of graduate students have been able to produce ethnographic films to accompany their thesis research projects.

Description of programs

  • Graduate diploma – disciplinary graduate diplomas provide an opportunity to acquire additional academic credentials at the graduate level without committing to a full master’s program. These programs allow students to expand on their knowledge of a particular discipline and may also be used for professional development within their careers.

  • MA – The MA program offers both course and thesis options. The thesis option requires an extended period of ethnographic fieldwork and can be completed in two years. The course option does not involve fieldwork and can be completed in one year.
  • PhD – The PhD in Anthropology program involves courses, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis. It can normally be completed in four years of full-time study.

Contact a faculty supervisor

Graduate applicants interested in research-based programs are strongly encouraged to connect with a faculty supervisor at the time of application. Visit the Department of Anthropology website for a list of faculty members, their research interests, and contact information. You may also use the Yaffle search application to find a supervisor you may wish to work with.

The School of Graduate Studies offers advice on how to search for and contact potential supervisors. Need more help? Try attending one of our webinars and information sessions for prospective graduate students.
