Head, Department of Earth Sciences

  

Memorial University invites applications from within the University for the position of Head, Department of Earth Sciences.  The appointment is expected to begin February 1, 2025, and is initially for a term of three years and is renewable.

Applicants should have a strong record of research, teaching, and administration in the field of Earth Sciences, or related field, and display strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and collegial leadership skills. The Head will be expected to identify and facilitate creative and proactive solutions to program and infrastructure challenges at the Department of Earth Sciences. For example, the head will be expected to actively promote large-scale infrastructure projects, to pursue grant funding for operations and training initiatives, and to build networks with academic, industry, and government partners. The Head should be a champion for the Department of Earth Sciences, with a desire to engage and fully represent it within and outside the University.

Applications should include: (i) a cover letter, (ii) a current CV, (iii) a statement of the applicant’s vision for the Department of Earth Sciences, and (iv) the names and contact information for two references (one internal and one external to Memorial University) that can supply reference letters.  These letters should primarily assess the applicant’s merits relevant to an administrative Department Head, emphasizing leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.  Applications and associated letters of reference will be treated in confidence. The CV and statement of vision submitted by the applicants will be made available to all members of the Earth Sciences Department. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by the Search Committee and will be asked to make a presentation to the Department of Earth Sciences on their vision for the Department.
