History and Philosophy of Science and Technology
How have people come to understand the natural world? How have scientific discoveries and technological innovations shaped human societies—and how have our ideas about science changed over time?
The Certificate in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (HPST) explores these questions by examining the history of scientific thought, technological innovation, and humanity's evolving relationship with the natural world. Administered by the Department of Classics, this interdisciplinary program spans from the European Bronze Age to the present, drawing on perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

Students explore the ideas, discoveries, and technologies that have transformed the way we understand the world while considering the cultural, ethical, and environmental impacts of scientific and technological change. A foundation course provides a shared introduction to the program and connects the diverse topics explored throughout the certificate.
The certificate offers valuable preparation for students pursuing studies in Archaeology, Classics, History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies, while also complementing degrees in Engineering, Medicine, Science, and Pharmacy. Whether your interests lie in the history of ideas, scientific discovery, or the societal impacts of technology, this certificate provides a broader perspective on the forces that continue to shape our world.
*Students wishing to declare a Certificate in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology should consult the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science's iDeclare page or contact HPST Program Director, Dr. Milo Nikolic.
