Chairperson | M.Sc Student

Hi! My name is Emily, and I'm so excited to serve as the Chairperson of the Biochemistry Graduate Society this year! I'm a first year Master's student in Biochemistry, where my research focuses on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular disease using cell culture, molecular biology, and mass spectrometry techniques. I hold a B.Sc. (Hons) joint in Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Behavioural Neuroscience from Memorial. Outside the lab, I love spending time with my friends, family, and two big dogs, as well as travelling, reading, and practicing yoga. I am passionate about science outreach and volunteer with SWAP, NLHS, and the Department's outreach programs. I'm really looking forward to an exciting and engaging year with the BCGS community!

Ihechi Marcus

Treasurer | M.Sc Student

My name is Ihechi, and I am excited to serve as treasurer for the BCGS this year! I am a first-year master’s student in biochemistry at MUN, where I also completed my B.Sc. My research focuses on a small molecule called miR-132 and its effects on cholesterol efflux and foam cell formation. Outside the lab, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading books, travelling, watching films, and volunteering in my church community. I look forward to using my organizational and volunteer experience to support the BCGS this year!

Asha De Silva

Communications Officer | Ph.D Candidate

I’m Asha De Silva, a PhD student in Biochemistry studying amino acid metabolism with a focus on optimizing methionine requirements for infants who rely on total parenteral nutrition. I am a trained veterinarian from Sri Lanka. With my volunteer experience and student engagement, I am excited to serve as the Communications Officer for BCGS. I look forward to keeping everyone informed and connected by sharing departmental news, upcoming events, and the amazing research happening in our community. Outside the lab, I enjoy cooking, reading, watching movies, and listening to music.

Symposium Coordinator | Ph.D Candidate

Hi! I’m Narmada Weerakkody, a final-year PhD student in the Department of Biochemistry. I’m originally from Sri Lanka. My research brings together my interests in biochemistry and nutrition. I study marine bioactive compounds and how they can be used to create functional foods and nutraceuticals that support better health. I love singing, spending time with animals, and finding joy in the small things that make life a little brighter.

Hi! My name is Fatema, and I am a symposium coordinator for the BGSC. I’m a master's student focusing on the metabolic and behavioural effects of novel receptor agonists in mouse models of obesity and diabetes. I’m passionate about research communication and creating opportunities for students to share their work. As Symposium Coordinator, I look forward to organizing engaging events that showcase the outstanding research being conducted in our department. Outside the lab, I enjoy watching some good thriller movies, bowling, and spending time with my family.

Hi! My name is Ashley, and I am the current Graduate Student Union representative for the BCGS. I hold a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry (Nutrition) and am currently in the first year of my Master’s degree, both at Memorial University. My research focuses on validating a nationally applicable Protein Foods Screener to accurately and efficiently assess protein intake among Canadian adults. Outside of academics, I enjoy giving back to the community through volunteer work with various non-profit organizations, exploring new places through travelling, and baking in my spare time.
