New OPE report explores how public engagement affects the careers of faculty members at Memorial University

In 2023, three OPE student employees used questionnaires and interviews to ask Memorial’s faculty members how their public engagement activities have influenced their academic careers. The report explores five broad themes: Career DevelopmentResearch Outputs, Leveraged Funding, Student’s Involvement and Teaching & Learning, and Partnerships.

The recognition of public engagement in promotion and tenure processes emerged as the main barrier faced by engaged faculty members. The reports provides ideas on how Memorial University can improve promotion and recognition of public engagement and provide support to publicly engaged faculty members.
