HSS Commons Student Space Cozier Than Ever

When we think of university campuses, we picture lecture halls and labs. But what about a space for that time between classes? It is equally essential to have a comfortable space to study or kick back and relax between lectures. The newly refurbished Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Commons, in SN-1107, offers HSS students such a space. Meet Maria Mayr

Maria Mayr's research focuses on transnational European memory discourses in German-language literature by authors from Eastern Europe. She has this to say about her SSHRC grant: "In times when it may seem that society is placing less and less value on the kind of work done in the humanities, this has been a good sign for me."

Meet Anne Graham

MLLC faculty member Anne Graham, studies sixteenth and seventeenth century French literature.

"Storytelling is at the heart of what it means to be human. It is through storytelling to that we make sense of our own experiences and get a chance to try to understand someone else’s experience. Research in literature is all about storytelling: What makes a good story? What is the storyteller’s goal or motivation? What is the impact on the reader or spectator? ... Literature is just storytelling that has come to us, eventually, through written form. Studying the kinds of stories others have told at different moments of history can help us to better understand the world and ourselves."

Rare manuscript a gift from the Russian Federation

Memorial University Libraries has received a donation of a 34-volume facsimile manuscript of The Illustrated Chronicle of Ivan the Terrible from the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Canada. Read more in the Gazette.

International Bachelor of Arts (iBA)

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has introduced a new degree program that students can complete instead of a BA: an international bachelor of arts (iBA). 

Celebrating the New Wave of Ibero American Cinema

The second annual Spanish Film Club celebrating the new wave of IberoAmerican cinema will kick off on Tuesday Sept. 20 with Everybody Leaves, a2015 Columbian film in Spanish with English subtitles, presented by Dr.Cory Thorne of the folklore department.
