Celebrating 50+ Years of French Learning in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon

Oct 21st, 2025

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures is proud to see another group of 10 students travel to the beautiful islands of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to be immersed in francophone language and culture.

The students were recently featured in the local news – check out what they have to say here.

Led by Dr. Samantha Carron, the Frecker Program Director, the group departed in early September for a full semester of study abroad. While in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, students are studying French and living with local host families, allowing them to gain first-hand experience of daily life in a Francophone community.

We are grateful to the families who continue to graciously host our students in their homes and to the residents of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon for welcoming our students to their community.

The Frecker program receives funding from the Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador under the Federal-Provincial Agreement on Official Languages in Canada in the form of bursaries awarded to students accepted to participate in this opportunity.

These partnerships have enriched the educational experiences of Memorial University students for more than 50 years – a tradition we’re proud to see continue.
