The HSS Dean's Office offers a range of supports as you develop your research funding proposals, and plan for longer term research funding. These include several tools and services to support you in finding funding and submitting applications, such as: matching your project to a funding program; mapping out a 10-year application planner; maintaining a grant library; maintaining template and advice packages for certain competitions; developing the proposal through advanced-draft-feedback; support through the submission processes; and reviewing and obtaining approvals once you submit.

Meet with a GFO to strategize

You are able to request a meeting with a GFO for any aspect of your research plans. For example, if you have a specific project and funding program in mind, you can meet to begin planning how best to strategically align the project to the funding program. If you're unsure which funding program best fits your project, they can also assist in matching it to a program. They can also meet to strategize about funding your research career goals, map out a 10-year schedule of proposal submissions that fits with teaching and other commitments, identify internal sources of cash and in-kind contributions, build your research CV, etc.

Also feel free to contact the GFOs if you have specific questions about deadlines, funding agency guidelines, submission procedures, including use of the Memorial Researcher Portal (RP), etc.

GFOs are available to meet with you at any stage of planning and execution of your research program, project, and funding goals.

The Grant Library

The Grant Facilitation Officers (GFOs) maintain the  (HEGAL), a grant library of SSHRC Insight Development Grant, SSHRC Insight Grant, and NSERC Discovery Grant proposals awarded to HSS applicants. These HSS awardees agreed to allow their proposals be made available to HSS applicants intending to apply to these competitions. 

To submit a request to borrow a holding, email GFO Heather O'Brien: hssresearchadmin@mun.ca. You must agree to the Terms and Conditions of borrowing from the grant library, and then Heather will email you a .pdf copy of the (redacted) proposal. 

 

Templates & Advice Packages

The HSS Grants Facilitation Officers (GFOs) created and maintain "Info, Template & Advice Packages" for the SSHRC Insight Grant and SSHRC Insight Development Grant (coming soon) programs. These Template Packages are updated once a year in the months prior to HSS's Advance Draft Feedback deadline (see the Research Funding Tracker for all internal deadlines). 

The Template Packages contain detailed information about: the IDG/IG program itself;  committee evaluation information; details regarding internal submission processes and supports; a budget calculator; blank Word doc templates for each section of the application (formatted to SSHRC's specifications and instructions); and Word doc templates which include advice, suggestions, and strategies for each section (also with SSHRC formatting).

To request a copy of one of the Template Packages, you must be affiliated with HSS and intending to apply to either the IG or IDG. Also note that the Template Package may not be distributed to anyone outside of HSS. Simply email an  with your request. 

 

Advanced Draft Feedback

If requested,  can provide Advanced Draft Feedback (ADF) on a draft of your application proposal (in whole or on a few sections only) for any funding opportunity. This review is optional. More details on ADF can be found in our FAQs.

ADF is provided well in advance of competition deadlines in order to make it feasible for prospective applicants to review the ADF feedback prior to submitting their proposals for the mandatory, internal HSS deadline. ADF 'aim-for-dates' are typically 2 months ahead of the HSS internal deadline, but may be further ahead for larger grant programs.

For certain programs (for now, just the SSHRC IDG and SSHRC IG), there are also Info, Template & Advice Packages and a Grant Library.
