HSS Commons Student Space Cozier Than Ever

When we think of university campuses, we picture lecture halls and labs. But what about a space for that time between classes? It is equally essential to have a comfortable space to study or kick back and relax between lectures. The newly refurbished Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Commons, in SN-1107, offers HSS students such a space. Check out this Gazette article on why interim Dean, Dr. Craig, wanted to rejuvenate this space for students.

Implementing a Basic Income Guarantee in Canada: Prospects and Problems

A Basic Income Guarantee solution to Poverty presented by the preeminent public finance economist, Dr. Robin Boadway.  Open to the public Wednesday, Nov 14th from 7 to 9 pm at Bruneau Centre Room 2001.

We outline the case for a basic income guarantee in Canada and characterize the alternative forms it could take. We propose a basic income guarantee design for Canada that allows both federal and provincial governments some discretion, is sufficient to move all persons out of poverty, is implemented through the tax system, and is affordable. We illustrate the feasibility of our basic income guarantee program using simulations based on Statistics Canada's SPSD model.

"Salary Disclosure Laws and the Gender Wage Gap: Evidence from Canada."

About this study: It is a well-known fact that women often earn less than men. One hypothesis raised by researchers and policy-makers is that the gender wage gap persists because it is hidden. If true, pay disclosure laws could potentially help close the gap by making salary differentials known to the public and open to scrutiny. In this study, we estimate the causal effect of disclosure laws on the gender wage gap within Canadian colleges and universities.

Student in the Spotlight, Paula Struk Jaia, March 2018

In the spring of 2017, after travelling more than 6,800 miles from Uruguay, South America, I came to Memorial University of Newfoundland as a transfer student to pursue a B.Sc. in Economics.

I have always had an interest in Economics. Being able to develop models of behavior to predict responses to changes in policy and market conditions is particularly interesting to me. I am intrigued by the possibility of furthering my understanding of the linkage between Economics and other social sciences such as Sociology, Political Science and Psychology. By pursuing a B.Sc., I have the opportunity to take courses from different fields and complete a Minor in Psychology.
