A Major in Classics will provide the student with a broad and deep understanding of the civilizations of ancient Greece and ancient Rome and an introduction to one of the classical languages (either Latin or Ancient Greek). Students will be encouraged to explore ancient world-views, literature, art, philosophy, technologies, and social and political institutions, and to think about the continuing legacy of classical civilization in the modern world.

The major program consists of a minimum of 39 credit hours in Classics courses in accordance with the following:

1. either Classics 1120 and 1121 or Classics 1130 and 1131;
2. at least 3 credit hours at the 4000 level;
3. an additional 12 credit hours at the 3000 level or above; and
4. an additional 18 credit hours at any level. With the exception of language courses (Classics 1120, 1121, 1130, 1131), no more than 6 1000-level credit hours may be counted towards the major.
