Centre for Research and Innovation Programs

The Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI), located in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a collaborative initiative founded by Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, the College of the North Atlantic (CNA), and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited (CBPPL). CRI serves as a hub for fostering research, creativity, and innovation, providing researchers, entrepreneurs, and professionals with the resources and support needed to explore new ideas, advance knowledge, and drive meaningful change.

Upcoming Workshops

With generous funding from project partners, CRI is proud to offer workshops that aim to enhance skills, foster innovation, and support professional development. These workshops are open to students, community members, and professionals eager to expand their knowledge and expertise.

Listed below are the upcoming workshops for the Winter 2025 semester:

Details: Designed for an adult audience, this workshop is an introduction to Fusion 360 and 3D printing. If you are interested in learning the basics for 3D printing or want to learn more about creating your own designs, this workshop is for you. No prior experience necessary. Please note that you will need to bring your own laptop and download a free version of Fusion 360 before the session. More information will be provided upon registration.

Details: Designed for teenagers ages 14 to 18, this workshop is an introduction to 3D printing. No prior experience necessary. Please note that you will need to bring your own device. More information will be provided upon registration.

Details: Vector-based drawing programs allow users to manipulate each element of an image and are essential for many real-life graphical purposes, including the Laser Cutter/Etcher in the CRI’s Maker Space. In this workshop, participants will learn what vector images are and the basics of how to create and manipulate them. The workshop will also include a demo of how to use the CRI’s Laser Cutter. Participants will need bring their own computers with the free vector graphics program “Inkscape” already downloaded. More information will be provided upon registration.

Details: In this workshop, participants will learn what vector images are and the basics of how to create and manipulate them for appliqué-based work. A laser cutter allows you to cut intricate designs for appliqué that would be time consuming or simply not possible by hand. The designs need to be created as vector images, which give the laser cutter instructions on how to cut the fabric. The workshop is targeted at absolute beginners with vector-based graphics programs, but participants should be familiar with basic computer functions like using a mouse/trackpad, saving/opening files, etc. Participants will need to bring their own computers with the free vector graphics program “Inkscape” already downloaded (please reach out if this is an issue).

Details: This workshop is designed to equip you with essential skills and insights. Participants will delve into the art of visual storytelling, exploring techniques that transform ordinary moments into compelling narratives. You'll gain hands-on experience in framing, lighting, and composition, learning how to use these elements to evoke emotion and convey powerful messages.

Details: In this beginner level workshop, participants will prepare a simple file for TC2 (digital Jacquard Loom) weaving based on a digital photo. Participants will create one weavable file, and 1-3 sample files based on one photo that they have taken. No weaving or photoshop experience is required! We will also learn basic weaving terminology. Note: We will not be weaving in this workshop, but rather will be preparing files only. Please bring a photo file you would like to work on and your own laptop.
