Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variation in
Newfoundland Caribou:
a representative DNA data set for
evolutionary genetic analysis
MtDNA sequences of 2,223 bp
were obtained from a total of 233 Caribou from 14
Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) on the island
of Newfoundland. Each WMU is treated as a sub-population,
which are grouped into sets of non-overlapping Herds that
make up the total island population. Phylogenetic analysis
shows that they occur in four distinct but related genetic
lineages (clades, designated A, B,
C, & D) (Figure 1). Each clade in
turn comprises a number of related haplotypes (haploid
DNA sequences, designated a, b, c,
... , s). This table gives the count of haplotypes for
each WMU.
