5.1 Qualifications for Admission

  1. For admission to the Master of Applied Literary Arts applicants shall:

    1. hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major or minor in English and have a GPA of at least 3.0, from an institution recognized by Senate;

    2. in some cases, if the GPA is below the minimum requirements of the SGS prior experience in an arts-related field of work will be considered.

    3. PLARs will be considered for placement in the program or for advanced placement. The prior work experience may be considered in place of a course or the internship.

  2. Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

    1. Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or Internet based score of 92-93 (or higher); or

    2. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher). Information regarding the TOEFL is available from theĀ Educational Testing Service. IELTS information is available from IELTS. It is noted that other equivalent tests acceptable to the School of Graduate Studies will also be considered.

  3. One seat per year will be reserved for a student with Indigenous ancestry who meets the minimum criteria for admission. There will be a bursary of $5000 for an Indigenous student to study full-time for the Master of Applied Literary Arts. Applicants wishing to be considered under this clause shall declare their Indigenous ancestry at the time of application.
