Sociology Programs

To complete the 36 credit hours required for a Major in Sociology, students must:

  1. Complete the following 6 core Sociology courses (18 credit hours):
    • SOCI 1000 Introduction to Sociology
    • SOCI 2040 The Sociological Imagination and Research Design
    • SOCI 3040 Quantitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3041 Qualitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3150 Classical Social Theory
    • SOCI 3160 Contemporary Social Theory
  2. Choose 6 additional Sociology courses (18 credit hours) as follows:
    • 2 courses (6 credit hours) at the 2000 level or higher
    • 2 courses (6 credit hours) at the 3000 or 4000 level
    • 2 courses (6 credit hours) at the 4000 level

As an alternative to a minor, students may choose to complete a major in Sociology and a major in another eligible program in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Joint Major Program requires 3 fewer credit hours in each participating major, as prescribed in each program’s Calendar entry.

In comparison to the Major, students completing a Joint Major in Sociology and another program are expected to complete 1 course (3 credit hours) at the 3000 or 4000 level instead of 2 courses (6 credit hours). The program is as follows:

To complete the 33 credit hours required for a Joint Major in Sociology and another program, students must:

  1. Complete the following 6 core Sociology courses (18 credit hours):
    • SOCI 1000 Introduction to Sociology
    • SOCI 2040 The Sociological Imagination and Research Design
    • SOCI 3040 Quantitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3041 Qualitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3150 Classical Social Theory
    • SOCI 3160 Contemporary Social Theory
  2. Choose 5 additional Sociology courses (15 credit hours) as follows:
    • 2 courses (6 credit hours) at the 2000 level or higher
    • 1 course (3 credit hours) at the 3000 or 4000 level
    • 2 courses (6 credit hours) at the 4000 level

To complete the 60 credit hours required for an Honours in Sociology, students must:

  1. Complete all courses required for the Major in Sociology (36 credit hours)
  2. Complete SOCI 4995 Honours Essay (3 credit hours)
  3. Complete at least 21 additional credit hours at the 3000 level or higher

Students may also pursue a Joint Honours Degree in Sociology and another eligible discipline. This must be arranged in consultation with the Head of the Department of Sociology and the Head of the partnering department. Program details may vary depending on the combination.

Admission to the Honours program in Sociology is competitive and selective. To apply, students must submit the Application for Admission to Honours Program form to the Department of Sociology.

To be considered for admission, students must:

  • Meet the general admission criteria for a BA Honours
  • Have a cumulative average of at least 75% in 18 credit hours (6 courses) in Sociology, including:
    • SOCI 3040 Quantitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3041 Qualitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3150 Classical Social Theory
    • SOCI 3160 Contemporary Social Theory

To complete a Minor in Sociology, students must complete 24 credit hours in Sociology, including:

  1. 5 core Sociology courses (15 credit hours):
    • SOCI 1000 Introduction to Sociology
    • SOCI 2040 The Sociological Imagination and Research Design
    • SOCI 3040 Quantitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3041 Qualitative Research Methods
    • SOCI 3150 Classical Social Theory or SOCI 3160 Contemporary Social Theory
  2. 2 additional Sociology courses (6 credit hours) at any level
  3. 1 additional Sociology courses (3 credit hours) at the 4000 level
