SoFa: The Sociology Family!
University is not just a collection of bricks, walls, or rooms. It is the atmosphere inside it that makes it different from other places and creates a memorable, interesting academic and life experience. Belonging to the university involves the relationships among the people present in it and the social relationships that are formed there. University is about the people and ideas which circulate through it. However, for a long time, with the increase in work and the overwhelming busyness of people, the opportunity to make meaningful connections has decreased. We are all overwhelmed with work, e-mails, meetings, assignments, and deadlines, so that no time is left to enjoy a friendly discussion together and listen to each other's ideas and experiences. In this situation, what better place than the Sociology Family (SoFa) to break this trend?
Let’s get together and have an excuse to have more communication inside the Sociology department. SoFa is here to get us out of our isolation in the office, bringing us around a shared table, and making the department an intellectual home for us. These meetings are an opportunity to learn more about the people of the department and become more united and feel a sense of belonging. We will have a gathering biweekly. In these meetings, one of us will talk about their concerns or research interests. It will be followed by a friendly discussion.
SoFa started by hosting department members to share their interests, concerns, and research. Starting in Fall 2025 we are expanding to topic-focused roundtables, newsletters, and designing programs to connect and make space for research and collaboration among undergrads, master's, and Ph.D. students.
