Eating Order Resistance

Eating Order Resistance and Community Celebrations

Dr. Nicole Schott, Banting Postdoctoral Researcher and Dr. Julia Janes, Associate Professor, are pleased to invite all who are interested to four days of Eating Order Resistance and Community Celebrations happening April 24-27, 2025. All events are free, including three showings of:

Telling Different Stories: The Fat Possibilities of Eating Order Resistance

Directed by Ruth Lawrence, performed by Nceba Khumalo, Andre Phoenix, Katie Fortune, Lu Qiao, Lisah Nsanzugwanko & Baptiste Neis, and produced by Nicole Schott & Julia Janes. Each show is accompanied by dinner or brunch catered by Amy Anthony. There will be opportunities to engage with the director, actors, producers and writers through audience interactive theatre.

Last April, 53 co-creators gathered in St. John’s, Newfoundland to witness performances of the research-infused poem called “Under the Psychiatric Treatment Regime: The Impossibility Paradoxes of Eating Dis/Order Recovery” directed by Santiago Guzmán and written by Nicole Schott. The script includes the verbatim and close to verbatim words of those who participated in their PhD research-informed play called Pro-Anorexia/Bulimia Embedded, as well as Nicole’s everyday observations and intimate experiences with dis/ordered eating and sanism. The poem and the play are a politics of protest and community-building against sanism, diet culture, fat hatred, “eating orders” and psychiatric violence.

During the April 2024 showings, co-creators provided feedback on the script, sounds, pace, props, accessibility, lighting etc. and contributed verbatim poetic stanzas. Nicole and Julia worked closely with the audio-recorded post-performance conversations to write in more verbatim, close-to-verbatim, and paraphrased words and feelings of the 53 co-creators.

This show tells different stories that are:
