Student Recognition of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award (Per Course Instructor)

In 2016, the School of Social Work at Memorial University launched the inaugural Student Recognition of Teaching Excellence Award (Per Course Instructor). The award, given annually, is determined by graduating students in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programs. Eligible candidates are social work Per Course Instructors who have taught undergraduate courses offered to the current graduates in the BSW programs.

The criteria for the award includes but is not limited to the following:

• Has a comprehensive knowledge of social work, e.g., social justice, anti- oppressive practice, respect for diversity, service to community.
• Is regularly well prepared for teaching: lectures, seminars, tutorials, guest speakers, and other teaching and learning activities.
• Has enthusiasm for the discipline and the capacity to arouse interest in it among the students.
• Encourages student participation in the teaching/learning process.
• Sets a high standard and successfully motivates students to attain such a standard.
• Communicates effectively at levels appropriate to students’ capacity.
• Utilizes methods of evaluation of student performance which stress an understanding of the subject, critical thinking, and ability to apply knowledge for practice.
• Is accessible to students outside class hours.
• Serves as professional role models in practice if applicable.
• Encourages and facilitates student engagement and community awareness.

In 2014, the School of Social Work at Memorial University launched the inaugural Student Recognition of Teaching Excellence Award (Faculty). The award, given annually, is determined by graduating students in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programs. Eligible candidates are social work Faculty members who have taught undergraduate courses offered to the current graduates in the BSW programs. The award will be made to a current faculty member as defined by MUNFA.

The criteria for the award includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Has a comprehensive knowledge of social work, e.g., social justice, anti-oppressive practice, respect for diversity, service to community.

Memorial University Awards

Dr. Ken Barter was the recipient of the 2015 President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, recognizing teaching excellence in the university community.

Dr. Delores Mullings was the recipient of the 2015 President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching (Faculty), which recognizes remarkable efforts in the classroom by faculty members with 5-10 years of service to the university.
