Student Affairs
The following are relevant regulations, policies, and procedures of the School of Social Work and the University that pertain to MSW students.
Registration
MSW students register online through Memorial Self Service. All graduate students in their first semester are required to register for SCWK 9000 (Graduate Registration). A student who is granted leave of absence must register for SCWK 9000 in the semester that they return from leave, even if not registering for courses that semester.
Recreation Fee Exemption
All students will be charged a Recreation Fee each semester. Students who are not attending courses on the St. John’s campus may apply to be exempted from the Recreation Fee. Students must complete the Graduate Student Request for Exemption form located online. Students should submit the form to the MSW Secretary at socialwork@mun.ca
Health Benefits
Full-time graduate students are enrolled in the National Student Health Network of the Canadian Federation of Students Health and Dental plans when they register, and fees are collected by the University each semester. Because international students do not have access to provincial medical coverage plans, they are eligible only for dental coverage. For an additional fee, students may extend the coverage to their partners, including same sex partners, and their dependent children.
Full-time graduate students can opt out of GSU Health Benefits by completing and submitting the appropriate forms (with proof of participation in another health plan) prior to the deadline. Students who do not opt out prior to the deadline will be charged the requisite fees for the health plan. Further information is available at: www.gsumun.ca
Part-time graduate students are not eligible for enrollment in the National Student Health Network of the Canadian Federation of Students Health and Dental plans. However, part-time students are considered full-time while registered for SCWK 6917. Students may opt out of GSU Health Benefits by completing and submitting the appropriate forms (with proof of participation in another health plan) prior to the deadline. Students who do not opt out prior to the deadline will be charged the requisite fees for the health plan. Further information is available at: www.gsumun.ca
Evaluation and Appeals
Tuition and fees
Information on tuition and fees is available on the School of Graduate Studies website.
For questions about the payment of tuition and fees, contact the Cashier’s Office.
Leave of Absence Policy
Students may be granted a general or parental leave of absence upon request. A leave of absence is a period of time during which a student is not required to register; no fees are assessed; and the time granted is not included in the maximum time period permitted for a graduate program. See: http://www.mun.ca/sgs/loa.pdf
Students considering a leave of absence should consult the MSW Student Services Coordinator who will help facilitate their request.
Academic Accommodations for Students
Students may have health challenges or conditions, or other personal circumstances requiring reasonable accommodation by the School. Students requiring accommodation should discuss their circumstances with the course instructor, the MSW Student Services Coordinator, and/or staff at the Glenn Roy Blundon Centre for Students with Disabilities. Reasonable accommodation includes adjusting a course, program, policy, procedure, or the physical environment that adversely affects the student without compromising academic integrity or changing the essential educational requirements of the MSW program.
Academic Dishonesty
In the course of a graduate degree program, the student is expected to learn those principles constituting proper academic behaviour. Violations are listed in the School of Graduate Studies General Regulations, Academic Dishonesty.
See Section 2.4.12.2 Academic Dishonesty: Offences.
Sexual Harassment
Memorial University is committed to an environment that is respectful and inclusive and free of sexual harassment. In the event of harassment, the student may seek the advice and support of MUN’s Sexual Harassment Officer online or via telephone at (709) 864-2015. All consultations are confidential; a complaint is not acted upon unless, or until, the Student specifically instructs the Advisor to do so.
Graduate Student Conduct
All graduate students shall adhere to Memorial University’s policies and guidelines relating to academic scholarship, integrity and ethical conduct informing the design, conduct, and reporting of responsible research.
CASW Professional Regulations
Memorial University of Newfoundland expects that students will conduct themselves in compliance with codes of ethics that govern students who are members of regulated professions. As social work is a regulated profession, students are expected to adhere to the CASW ethics and guidelines:
