How to Apply

To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work as a First Degree program or the Bachelor of Social Work as a Second Degree program, students must complete all required prerequisite courses. Direct admission from high school into the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program is not available.

Students who are not ready to apply for entry into the BSW program

If you do not have all the required prerequisite courses completed for admission directly into the BSW program (e.g., applying from high school, or transferring with some but not all prerequisite courses, or a current Memorial student), then you may first need to apply to Memorial University for admission and be accepted as an undergraduate student to complete the required prerequisite courses. When completing the application, choose “Unsure (Undergraduate)” as the Area of Interest.

Please note that Memorial University has multiple admissions deadlines throughout the year.

Students who are ready to apply for entry to the BSW program

Current Memorial students or transfer students who have completed (or have in-progress) all of the required courses for admission into the BSW program, can apply to either the BSW as a First Degree or the BSW as a Second Degree program. If you wish to be considered for both programs, you must submit separate applications for each with all required documents.

Application Deadline:

Admission into both BSW programs is available for the Fall semester only.

  • The application deadline is March 1 of the year of application.
  • Applicants taking courses at another institution must submit a final transcript to docs@mun.ca by June 1 of the year of application
  • For Second Degree applicants applying with a first degree from another institution, a confirmation of degree must be received at docs@mun.ca by June 1 of the year of application.

Readmission is available for both Fall and Winter semesters.

  • The application deadline for Fall is March 1 of the year of application.
  • The application deadline for Winter (readmission only) is September 15

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Completing the Application

To apply for the BSW as a First Degree and/or the BSW as a Second Degree, you will need to submit the online application through the Admissions portal.

The application for the BSW program typically opens in mid-October for the following year’s Fall intake.

To apply, you must select "Create Account" or if you have already created an account, “Sign In”.

Once your account is created and you are signed in, select "Create a New Application," and select the type of application that applies to you (Current Undergrad Student, Canadian applicant, or International applicant).

Choose “Social Work (Undergraduate)” as your Area of Interest, and then “Bachelor of Social Work (as a First Degree)” or “Bachelor of Social Work (as a Second Degree)”as the Academic Program.

In addition to completing the online application, applicants are required to submit the Personal Statement and Experience Form and transcripts from any institution previously attended. These documents must be uploaded under the Documents & Supplemental Items tab within the Admission portal prior to submitting the application.

An online application with all required documents must be submitted by the application deadline March 1.*

Applications submitted without all required documents will be deemed incomplete and will not be considered.

Educational Equity Initiative

The School of Social Work strives to enrich its teaching, research and scholarship through the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds with different attributes. However, for many applicants, institutional processes and cultural and racial differences exist which have presented barriers to learning.  In keeping with the Canadian Association of Social Work Education (CASWE) Standards for Accreditation, the mission of Memorial University, and the mission, vision, and values of the School of Social Work, we have developed our Educational Equity Initiative.

The intent of this initiative is to encourage applicants with diverse identities, experiences, and backgrounds to apply. Further, the Educational Equity Initiative aims to correct conditions of disadvantage in professional education.  Therefore, the School offers a minimum of 20% of the seats in the BSW program to eligible applicants who have met the minimum requirements for admission and who identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis (5% of seats), identify as a member of a racialized group (5% of seats), identify as having a disability (5% of seats), and/or as members of another equity group (5% of seats).

If you would like to be considered for the Educational Equity Initiative, make sure to fill out the relevant section in your application on the Admission portal. Please note that declaration of citizenship status is independent of consideration for the Educational Equity Initiative.
