Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements for the BSW programs are outlined in the University Calendar.

Admission into both the BSW as a First Degree and BSW as a Second Degree programs is competitive. We offer a limited number of seats (80 seats total for both programs combined). Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you’ll be accepted into a program.

Bachelor of Social Work as a First Degree

To apply to the BSW as a First Degree program, you must:

1. Complete the following academic requirements (prerequisite courses, 30 credit hours) at Memorial University, or the equivalent from another institution:

You must complete the 10 prerequisite courses with a minimum of 65% in each course and achieve an average of at least 65% in your last 30 credit hours of undergraduate study.

NOTES*This introductory social work course is available to Memorial students and is typically offered online in the Fall and Winter Semesters. This is a great opportunity for students to explore social work. **27 credit hours from Complementary Studies.

All required courses must be completed by the end of the Winter semester before the academic year in which you are seeking admission or readmission (e.g. Winter 2025-26 for Fall 2026).

2. You must submit the Personal Statement and Experience Form to indicate why you think you would be a suitable candidate for the BSW program and submit details of your work/volunteer experience and/or community involvement in human services. All experience hours must be completed by the application deadline.

Bachelor of Social Work as a Second Degree

To apply to the BSW as a Second Degree program, you must have 1):

  • been awarded a Bachelor’s degree, or been approved*;
  • achieved an average of at least 70% in the courses comprising the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study;
  • completed a minimum of 45 credit hours from one or more of the following disciplines: Anthropology, Archaeology, Communication and Media Studies, Criminology, Economics, English, Environment and Sustainability, Folklore, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Humanities, Law and Public Policy, Law and Society, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religion and Culture, Social/Cultural Studies, Sociology, Sustainable Rural Communities, or other humanities or social science discipline completed at another university that is deemed by the Undergraduate Studies Committee or its designee to prepare students for the BSW program. Students need to have passed these courses, but not necessarily received a grade of 70% in each individual course.
  • completed the 9 credit hours of required prerequisite courses outlined below and must have achieved a minimum grade of 70% in each of these required prerequisite courses. The 9 credit hours of required prerequisite courses are:
    • 3 credit hours for Social Work 1710
    • 3 credit hours in developmental psychology, human development, and/or human behaviour beyond the introductory level. The following Memorial courses count toward this requirement: Psychology 2010, 2020, 2025, 2030, 2100, 2125, 2800, 3050, 3100, 3533, 3640, 4050, 4051, Sociology 3120, 3290.
    • 3 credit hours from Complementary Studies, Learning Objective Three.

2) You must complete a minimum of 300 hours of work experience/volunteer experience and/or community involvement experience in human services that relates to social work while meeting the academic performance criteria. You must submit the Personal Statement and Experience Form to indicate why you think you would be a suitable candidate for the BSW program and submit details of your work/volunteer experience and/or community involvement in human services. All experience hours must be completed by the March 1 application deadline.

NOTE: *Degree must be approved by the end of the winter semester for the year in which admission/readmission is being sought. Confirmation of degree must be received at admiss.docs@mun.ca by June 1st.

Any in-progress courses taken at Memorial or another institution that will be used for admission must be completed by the end of the winter semester in the academic year in which you are seeking admission or readmission (e.g. Winter 2026 for Fall 2026 admission).

For applicants taking courses at another institution in the winter semester, a final transcript must be received at admiss.docs@mun.ca by June 1st.
