Undergraduate Scholarships, Awards & Bursaries

At Memorial University’s School of Social Work, we are proud to recognize the achievements, dedication, and contributions of our undergraduate students through a variety of scholarships, bursaries, and awards. Each year, thanks to the generosity of our donors and community partners, we are able to provide meaningful financial support to students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, community engagement, dedication in field-based settings, and commitment to the discipline of social work.

Definitions of scholarships, awards and bursaries:

  • A scholarship is based on academic performance and is awarded to the student with the highest average who meets the other conditions of the scholarship. Scholarship standing is required for all scholarships. Definition of scholarship standing: 2025-2026 University Calendar | Memorial University of Newfoundland
  • Awards, fellowships, studentships, prizes and medals are awarded to recognize special achievements or to assist with special projects or travel and may be awarded to students who have an academic status of clear standing as defined by the University and meet the other conditions of recognition.
  • A bursary is based primarily on financial need and may be awarded to full-time students who have a minimum GPA of 2 (out of a possible 4) and meet the other conditions of the bursary.

The School of Social Work offers three main categories of scholarships, awards and bursaries: application-based, academic-based, and practicum-based. See Current Opportunities to view scholarships, awards and bursaries available for the current academic year.

Application-based scholarships, awards and bursaries recognize academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, or financial need. Students must submit an application to be considered. Please review the eligibility criteria carefully and gather all necessary information (e.g., brief resume, confirmation of indigenous status) before starting your application. Students may apply for any application-based scholarships, awards or bursaries for which they meet the criteria. Recipients are selected by the School of Social Work’s Scholarship and Awards Subcommittee. See Current Opportunities for more information and link to required application.

Academic-based scholarships, awards and bursaries are granted automatically to students who achieve outstanding academic performance in their social work studies. An application is not required. Recipients are identified and selected based on academic standing only. Scholarships are based on academic performance recorded in the preceding academic year. For example, scholarships awarded in Fall 2025 are based on academic standing in Spring 2024, Fall 2024 and Winter 2025. See Current Opportunities for details on specifice academic-based scholarships, awards and bursaries.

Practicum-based awards and scholarships recognize students who demonstrate excellence, professionalism, and strong commitment to social work values during field education placements. Some of these awards are automatically granted to students who meet specific criteria for their field placements and practicum performance, while other awards require an application. The call for applications for these awards will be announced in November of each year. Recipients are selected by a Team of Field Education Coordinators. See Current Opportunities for details on specific practicum-based scholarships and awards.
