Cheryl Mallard, MSW, RSW, is the Manager of Field Education for the School of Social Work. In addition to coordinating and developing field internships, she facilitates learning for new and experienced field instructors through the Field Instructors Course. Cheryl is also a sessional instructor in social work practice courses and has been a teaching assistant with the MSW program.

Cheryl has been a social worker in Newfoundland and Labrador for 25 years and has worked in a variety of practice settings in rural and urban areas of the province including Child Welfare, Corrections, Mental Health and Addictions, Employee Assistance, and the Housing and Homelessness sector. She is passionate about community based practice, service user participation and leadership development, especially as it relates to individuals, groups, and communities having a real voice in the identification, development, and design of programs and services that are responsive and relevant to their particular situations.

Prior to joining the School of Social Work, Cheryl was the Director of Housing Programs with Choices for Youth, St. John’s, NL for over a decade. Throughout her career, Cheryl has served on a number of boards and committees, including former chair of the Grace Sparkes House, Marystown, NL; Co-chair of the St. John’s Housing and Homeless Network; and a member of the National Learning Community on Youth Homelessness. Additionally, she has presented on youth engagement and responses to youth homelessness at a number of conferences and trainings at the local, provincial, and national level, including the Atlantic Mental Health Summit, Halifax (2010); the Canadian Housing Renewal Association Congress, Quebec City (2010); and the PEI Community Advisory Committee on Homelessness (2013).

Cheryl is a graduate of Memorial University completing her Bachelor of Social Work in 1989 and Master of Social Work in 2009. She has also completed training in suicide intervention, leadership development, and organizational growth and change management.
