Herring Gull

may take a few seconds to load

has black wing tips

adults have a light gray mantle

 

immatures are brown

 

the aging process (plumage changes) in Herring Gulls is shown below (very similar in other large gull species)

Key points for identification:

a 'black-winged' gull

much bigger that Ring-blled Gull

immatures less 'chequered' than Great Black-backed Gull 

adults with light gray mantle (cf GBB Gull), yellow bill with red spot (cf Ring-billed Gull)
