Caroline Hong Community Service Award
The Caroline Hong Community Service Award was created to honour the life-long contributions to community leadership and dedication to volunteerism of Caroline Hong. Caroline Hong was a scientist and long-time resident of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, involved in many aspects of community and furthering the development of Labrador and its people. Born in Hong Kong, she immigrated to Canada in 1969 and earned a BSc degree in Food Sciences from Memorial University. In 1990, she met her husband and life partner, Perry Trimper, and in 1995, they moved to HV-GB establishing Labrador operations for an environmental consulting firm. Caroline embraced the adventure of Northern life, and had a varied and successful 30-year career. Community service was extremely important for Caroline. She was a humble and hard-working volunteer for a wide variety of organizations from ExpoLabrador, Kids Eat Smart, to the Rotary Club of HV-GB (where she was recognized with a Paul Harris Fellowship). She also was committed to her United Church ‘family’. In the fall of 2022, Caroline was recognized with an invitation by 5 Wing Goose Bay to become their Honourary Colonel, but she had to withdraw in 2023 when she learned of her cancer diagnosis. Valued at $3,000, the award will be granted annually to an undergraduate student who is enrolled full-time in any program of study at the Labrador Campus of Memorial University. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University, have graduated from a Labrador-based high school, and demonstrate a commitment to community service and volunteerism. Further preference may be given to students with demonstrated financial need. A student may only receive the award once. To be considered, an application is required and can be obtained from the Administrative Office, Labrador Campus. The award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Vice-Provost, Labrador Campus and Dean, School of Arctic & Subarctic studies.
