Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity: agricultural safety research and knowledge mobilization
The SafetyNet Centre for Occupational Health & Safety Research (www.safetynet.mun.ca), is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow (funded in part through Memorial’s Office of Public Engagement, Faculty of Medicine and Grenfell VPR, with additional support from Agrivita Canada Inc. and Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada), to develop and carry out a research and knowledge mobilization program on occupational health and safety for the Newfoundland and Labrador agricultural sector.
Responsibilities of the postdoctoral fellow will include: (1) finalizing a review of literature on health and safety in agriculture contextualized for Newfoundland and Labrador and a related manuscript for publication; (2) data analysis of results from a survey of industry and stakeholder groups in Newfoundland and Labrador and production of related plain language report and manuscript; (3) participating in a national research program to design, test and mobilize knowledge about Roll-over Protection Systems for tractors; (4) designing and implementing a knowledge transfer and research program on agricultural safety for the province focused on one or more of the following: research and training related to prevention of chemical exposures, repetitive motion-related injuries and injuries related to working with machinery and other equipment; (5) development of funding applications for this and subsequent work.
The postdoctoral fellowship will be a one-year position (subject to renewal if sufficient funding can be found). It will be located at the SafetyNet Centre in St. John’s with some time to be spent at the new Boreal Ecosystem Research Institute (BERI) at Grenfell College in Corner Brook with a joint appointment between the Faculty of Medicine and Grenfell. The holder of the fellowship will be co-supervised by Dr. Zhiwei Gao (Faculty of Medicine), Dr. Adrian Unc at the BERI, and Dr. Barb Neis (Senior Research Associate, SafetyNet).
The successful applicant will have completed all requirements for a doctorate or equivalent degree in any of a wide range of disciplines related to occupational health, public health, and/or the social science of work prior to taking up the position. A strong background in agricultural safety research and interest/experience in knowledge mobilization are required. Experience with working with a multi-stakeholder advisory committee or with other forms of collaborative research would be an asset.
