Full Engage Memorial Week, 2014 program now available
From Feb.10-15, Memorial University invites all members of the public to Engage Memorial Week 2014.
With more than 25 public events planned in St. John’s, Corner Brook and Northwest River, it’s a chance to share the many collaborative projects and initiatives taking place between Memorial and the people and organizations of this province and beyond.
The schedule includes a broad range of events – everything from concerts and art gallery receptions to public forums and workshops. All events are free of charge and most are open to all. While many will take place at various Memorial campuses (St. John’s, Grenfell and the Labrador Institute) others are being hosted by some of Memorial’s partners, including Eastern Edge Gallery, Boogaloo Music and Coleman’s Garden Market.
“We’ve planned a week of fun, accessible things to do that show just how interesting and fruitful relationships between Memorial and the public can be,” said Dr. Rob Greenwood, executive director, Office of Public Engagement. “This is work that is relevant to the people of this province and that takes advantage of the experience and expertise of both Memorial and the public.”
For those looking to get a broad picture of the sort of publicly engaged work and research happening at Memorial, Engage Memorial Fest, Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s might be a good place to start.
Along with exhibits featuring everything from a marine touch tank, service dogs, science experiments and interactive games, there will be several stages featuring talks, group discussions and musical performances.
Topics to be covered include arts and social justice, science and engineering, and more. The event is family friendly and accessible, with parking available in the St. John’s Arts and Culture parking lot. Lunch and refreshments will also be provided, including hot drinks courtesy of Rocket Bakery. Registration is suggested, but walk-ins are also welcome.
“We truly believe in the value of our relationships with the public – it’s a win-win situation. This is our chance to celebrate and share those successes,” said Dr. Greenwood. “Plus, it’s a great reason to get out of the house or office in the middle of February!”
