Keynote
Many people consider the university a net public good: a place for open dialogue, where commitment to learning, inquiry, and informed critique is a given.
But what is the role of an intellectual institution in a time of increasing—and increasingly vocal—anti-intellectualism? How can universities better respond to the needs of the communities they serve? What does Canada’s publicly funded post-secondary sector owe the public, and, crucially, what does the university owe itself?
Join us as Dr. Ted Hewitt, President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council shares his perspective on these and other questions, followed by panel discussion featuring nationally recognized, community-engaged researchers, Dr. Barbara Neis (Memorial) and Dr. Rashid Sumaila (UBC)
This session is open to all, and will be livestreamed: Engage Memorial Symposium registration is NOT required to attend.
