Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Competition

The 2024-2025 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship program was launched in April 2024.

This program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social and research based growth. The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs by its emphasis on the synergy between an applicant’s individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career and the host institution’s commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated (including synergy with the host institution’s strategic priorities).

An applicant to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must complete their application in full collaboration with the proposed host institution.

The awards are a maximum amount of $70,000 per year (taxable) for up to 2 years (non-renewable), and 70 fellowships are awarded nationally each year. Successful candidates at Memorial will also be eligible to receive a Banting Postdoctoral Research Grant, to be jointly funded by Memorial’s Vice-President (Research) and the School of Graduate Studies. The value of the Research Grant will be $10,000 per annum for a maximum of two years. Further information can be found on the Government of Canada website.

Memorial Internal Process and Timeline for 2024-2025

  • June 18, 2024: Deadline for potential applicants to contact SGS to notify if submitting a Banting application.  Applicants should provide their name, discipline, and supervisor for the Banting application. Please submit your notification to the Scholarships Officer at SGS@mun.ca.
  • July 19, 2024: Deadline for submission of complete Banting application packages. As part of the internal review process, candidates will be required to complete the online Banting application and submit supporting documents. Please submit your package as a single PDF file to the Scholarships Officer – SGS@mun.ca.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.  SGS will check application packages for completeness and eligibility of applicants.

    Your package must include the following for internal review:

    - your Vanier-Banting academic CCV
    - Significance of Research Contributions statement(1 page)
    - Significance of Leadership Contributions statement(1 page)
    - Lay Abstract (2000 characters)
    - SGBA+ considerations (2000 characters) *if applicable
    - Research Proposal (4 pages)
    - Bibliography
    - Supervisor’s Statement (4 pages)
    - A list of Banting referees names, institutions, and any affiliations/relationships to the applicant, and an indication of which one is for the required arm's length referee. (We do not review letters of assessment; rather we examine the names of reviewers and their affiliations to the applicants).

  • Mid-August 2024: The internal review committee completes the internal review of applications and submits recommendations to SGS. 
  • Mid-to-Late August 2024: Notification of successful and unsuccessful applicants and their proposed supervisors. A summary of the feedback from the internal review committee on the BPDF application will be provided by SGS to successful applicants and their supervisors.
  • August 28, 2024: Successful applicants are required to submit the Endorsement Approval Form to confirm that departments are aware of the application and that department Cash and In-kind commitments included in the proposal are approved. The form can be completed before the July submission deadline, but it is only required for successful applicants.
  • September 13, 2024: Institutional support letter provided to the successful applicant(s).
  • September 17, 2024 (20:00 EDT):  Application submission deadline; applicants are responsible for submitting their applications online.
